Excalibur Automatic Skeleton - The epitome of elegance and finesse

The first ever Roger Dubuis skeletonised automatic movement, code-named RD820SQ, is the star of the show in a fascinating line-up of Excalibur Automatic Skeleton models. Framed by the iconic Excalibur design features expressed through a pleasing variety of materials, this eminently versatile calibre embodies the essence of elegance and refinement conveyed in the language of architectural and technical mechanics.

The epitome of elegance and finesse

The iconic Excalibur collection by Roger Dubuis features several hand-wound models showcasing its self-assigned mission as the “pioneer of contemporary skeletons” as well as its acknowledged expertise in the realm of tourbillons. Well aware that many mechanical watch fans also appreciate the reliability and convenience of automatic movements, the Manufacture introduced its selfwinding RD820SQ calibre in 2015 comprising 167 individually finished parts.

The combined technical expertise and aesthetic air of the development team was devoted to ensuring that the stellar transparency one expects from a Roger Dubuis skeleton movement is not compromised by the self-winding train. Its famous star shape, based on the ‘astral skeleton’ principle, is deliberately raised to create a characteristic 3D effect further accentuated by the highly specific design of the micro-rotor. The latter deserves a special mention, as a Roger Dubuis signature feature that embodies a determination to push all existing boundaries. Ten years after eliminating the central rotor in 2005 and yet achieving equivalent winding power, the Manufacture thus took things to the next level by skeletonising it in an automatic movement, while ensuring that the lighter than ever weight in no way diminishes its ef ciency that others might see as dependent on its weight.

Unmistakable aesthetic air

These are lifestyle timepieces in the noblest sense of the term. Their distinctive Excalibur attributes – such as the round case with fluted bezel and triple lugs, as well as the Dauphine type hands – contribute to the handsome and distinguished aura radiated by these models designed for a wide range of professional and private occasions.

The current range of options available in various materials provides plenty of scope for adjusting the choice of model to individual preferences. The warm glow of pink gold (even set with gems for extra sparkle), the cool splendour of white gold, the edgy appeal of contemporary DLC- coated titanium, or the sporty, high-tech look of superlight carbon bre sheet moulding compound (SMC)....

The one and only RD820SQ movement shines more brightly than ever in a fascinating constellation of Excalibur Automatic Skeleton models.
